Comparison of Art form and Horace Ode 1.5

7 Things by Miley Cyrus
I probably shouldn't say this
But at times I get so scared
When I think about the previous
Relationship we shared
It was awesome but we lost it
It's not possible for me not to care
And now we're standing in the rain
But nothing's ever gonna change until you hear
My dear

The seven things I hate about you
The seven things I hate about you
Oh you
You're vain, your games
You're insecure
You love me, you like her
You make me laugh
You make me cry
I don't know which side to buy
Your friends they're jerks
When you act like them
Just know it hurts
I wanna be with the one I know
And the seventh thing I hate the most that you do
You make me love you

It's awkward and its silent
As I wait for you to say
What I need to hear now
Your sincere apology
When you mean it I'll believe it
If you text it I'll delete it
Let's be clear
Oh, I'm not coming back
You're taking seven steps here

Chorus:
The seven things I hate about you
You're vain, your games
You're insecure
You love me, you like her
You make me laugh, you make me cry
I don't know which side to buy
Your friends they're jerks
When you act like them
Just know it hurts
I wanna be with the one I know
And the seventh thing I hate the most that you do
You make me love you

And compared to all the great things
That would take too long to write
I probably should mention the seven that I like

The seven things I like about you
Your hair, your eyes
Your old Levis
When we kiss im hipnotised
You make me laugh, you make me cry
But I guess that's both I'll have to buy
Your hand in mine
When we're intertwined
Everything's alright
I wanna be with the one I know
And the seventh thing I like the most that you do
You make me love you

You do, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh oh

Ode 1.5 by Horace

Quis multa gracilis te puer in rosa
perfusus liquidis urget odoribus
grato, Pyrrha, sub antro?
cui flavam religas comam,

simplex munditiis? heu quotiens fidem
mutatosque deos flebit et aspera
nigris aequora ventis
emirabitur insolens,

qui nunc te fruitur credulus aurea,
qui semper vacuam, semper amabilem
sperat, nescius aurae
fallacis! miseri, quibus

intemptata nites! me tabula sacer
votiva paries indicat uvida
suspendisse potenti
vestimenta maris deo.

As it seems, Horace and Miley Cyrus have very similar viewpoints on the issue of love. In his Ode 1.5, and her song 7 Things, both artists portray the excitement of being in a new relationship. For example, in the song Miley Cyrus sings about her former relationship with her lover stating, "your hair, your eyes...When we kiss im hipnotised." Similarily in Ode. 1.5 Horace states, "flavam comam munditiis," meaning, "your golden hair with elegance." In the beginning of Miley's relationship, she is so enamored with her lover because of his beauty and the way he was able to draw her in, making her always want more. Likewise, recalling his relationship with Pyrrha, Horace remembers how her beauty made him love struck. Both Miley's and Horace's lovers make their judgement cloudy because of their beauty and entrancing features. Also, Miley sings in her song, "Your hand in mine When we're intertwined Everything's alright." Horace states, "grato sub antro," meaning, "under a pleasing cave." Miley feels like her relationship is perfect when she is alone and connected to her lover where she can fully display her affection. Horace feels like his relationship is perfect when he is alone and hiding out as well. Without any interferences, the truth in the relationship cannot come out, and no disasters can occur.
After Horace and Miley experience their relationship they discover all the lies and turmoil that went along with it, and that relationships can actually be disastrous. Miley says, "You make me laugh, you make me cry, I don't know which side to buy." Horace says, "asper aequora emirabitur," meanings, "Wonder at the sea violent. Miley and Horace feel confused by their lover. Their lover's toil with their minds by acting kind and then acting out in hate. With Horace, the sea represents his relationship with Pyrrha and how he never knows if it is going to be up or down. In life the sea can be seen as calming or greatly shaken and disasterous. These two extremes in his relationship affect his emotional state in a bad way. Miley is upset because she never knows how her lover will treat her and is very confused. Both Horace and Miley decide that they are through with dealing with their relationships. Miley states, "If you text it I'll delete it, Let's be clear, Oh, I'm not coming back." Horace says, "suspendisse vestimenta," meaning, "hung up wet garmets." In Ode 1.5, the wet cloths symbolize all the problems in Horace's relationship that he is now leaving, abandoning, or "hanging up." The cloths are wet because Horace has recently ended his relationship with Pyrrah. With Miley, she refuses to respond to any reference involving her former relationship. It is evident that both people are fed up with their lovers. Though Miley and Horace are aware of all the terrible qualities that their ex-lovers have, they are still able to recall all the characteristics of their lovers that made Horace and Miley first fall in love with them. It is evident that Horace still may have feelings toward Pyrrha because he writes a whole Ode on their relationship in which he fully analyzes her qualities. Miley obviously still has feelings for her lover because she states, "And the seventh thing I hate the most that you do, You make me love you."

Avenged Sevenfold : Seize The Day Lyrics

Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over

I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry
These's streets we traveled on will undergo our same lost past

I found you here, now please just stay for a while
I can move on with you around
I hand you my mortal life, but will it be forever?
I'll do anything for a smile, holding you 'til our time is done
We both know the day will come, but I don't want to leave you

I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry
(a melody, a memory, or just one PICTURE)

Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over

Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in
No longer needed here so where do we go?
Will you take a journey tonight, follow me past the walls of death?
But girl, what if there is no eternal life?

I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry
(a melody, a memory, or just one PICTURE)

Seize the day or die regretting the time You lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
Trials in life, questions of us existing here
Don't wanna die alone without you here
Please tell me what we have is real

(guitar solo)

So what if I never hold you, yeah, or kiss your lips again? Whooooah
So I never want to leave you and the memories OF us to see
I beg don't leave me

Seize the day or die regretting the time You lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
Trials in life, questions of us existing here
Don't wanna die alone without you here
Please tell me what we have is real

(Silence, you lost me-- no chance for one more day)
(Silence, you lost me-- no chance for one more day)
(I stand here alone
Falling away from you, no chance to get back home) x2

(Silence, you lost me-- no chance for one more day)
(Silence, you lost me-- no chance for one more day)

Ode 1.11

Tu ne quaesieris, scire nefas, quem mihi, quem tibi
finem di dederint, Leuconoe, nec Babylonios
temptaris numeros. Ut melius, quidquid erit, pati,
seu pluris hiemes seu tribuit Iuppiter ultimam,
quae nunc oppositis debilitat pumicibus mare
Tyrrheneum. Sapias, vina liques, et spatio brevi
spem longam reseces; dum loquimur, fugerit invida

aetas: carpe diem quam nimium credula postero. The song Seize The Day by Avenged Sevenfold, and Ode 1.11 by Horace, have very similar concepts. In Ode 1.11 Horace states, "ne quaesieris (scire nefas)". This means, "should not ask it is a crime to know." In Seize The Day it says, " Im too young to worry." Both arts display the idea that it is impossible to know what the future holds. There is no use in wondering what tomorrow will bring, or how much time on earth there is left because people have no control over their fate (like in Ode. 1.11 it is stated that Gods are the only ones who have control over when a mortal is to die.) Death is inevitable, and time is wasted in trying to determine when death will occur. Horace also states in the Ode, "hiemes..debilitat Tyrrhenum." Meaning, "Winters(years)...weakens the Tyrrhenian sea." In the song it is said, " Streets..undergo same lost past." Horace uses the sea as a metaphor for life, just like the song uses streets to represent life. Everyone is going to suffer in life and go through hardships. In the poem the narrator wants to get the message across that not only him and the girl he is talking to will suffer, but everyone else in life as well. Horace says in his Ode that even something as grand as the sea is will suffer. In addition, Horace and the song writer both use words in which to entice their lover, Horace states," fugerit invida aetas." That means, "Jealous time will have fled." The song says, "what if i never hold you?" Both men are trying to influence their audience in a sexual way. Horace may be trying to get the woman he is talking to, to go to bed with him by implying that time is wasted when they are not in bed together. The songwriter is telling his woman that they do not know how much longer they have with one another, so they should use the time they have to show their affection for one another. Lastly, Horace says, "Carpe diem," the well known phrase which means, "seize the day". The song says, "seize the day or die regretting." Both men believe that in life people should never question their fate, nor waste time in wondering, "What if." The amount of time on earth is unknown and it would be a waste to die with regrets.

Comparison of Art form and Catullus Poem 30

Poem 30 by Catullus
Alfene immemor atque unanimis false sodalibus,
1
Alfenus, ungrateful and false to your faithful comrades,
iam te nil miseret, dure, tui dulcis amiculi?
2
do you now cease (ah, cruel !) to pity your beloved friend?
iam me prodere, iam non dubitas fallere, perfide?
3
What? do you not shrink from betraying me, deceiving me, faithless one?
nec facta impia fallacum hominum caelicolis placent.
4
Do the deeds of deceivers please the gods above?
quae tu neglegis ac me miserum deseris in malis.
5
All this you disregard, and desert me in my sorrow and trouble;
eheu quid faciant, dic, homines cuiue habeant fidem?
6
ah, tell me, what are men to do, whom are they to trust?
certe tute iubebas animam tradere, inique, me
7
For truly you used to bid me trust my soul to you (ah, unjust!),
inducens in amorem, quasi tuta omnia mi forent.
8
leading me into love as if all were safe for me;
idem nunc retrahis te ac tua dicta omnia factaque
9
you, who now draw back from me, and let the winds and vapours of the air
uentos irrita ferre ac nebulas aereas sinis.
10
bear away all your words and deeds unratified.
si tu oblitus es, at di meminerunt, meminit Fides,
11
If you have forgotten this, yet the gods remember it, remembers Faith,
quae te ut paeniteat postmodo facti faciet tui.
12
who will soon make you repent of you deed.

"What goes around comes around" by Justin Timberlake

Hey girl, is he everything you wanted in a man?
You know I gave you the world
You had me in the palm of your hand
So why your love went away
I just can't seem to understand
Thought it was me and you babe
Me and you until the end
But I guess I was wrong

Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around
That you were gonna make me cry
It's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find...

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

Now girl, I remember everything that you claimed
You said that you were moving on now
And maybe I should do the same
Funny thing about that is
I was ready to give you my name
Thought it was me and you, babe
And now, it's all just a shame
And I guess I was wrong

Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Can you tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry)
That you were going to make me cry
Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

What goes around comes around
Yeah
What goes around comes around
You should know that
What goes around comes around
Yeah
What goes around comes around
You should know that

Don't want to think about it (no)
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it (yeah)
I just can't do without ya
Tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry)
That you were going to make me cry
Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
But that's okay baby 'cause in time you will find

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

[Comes Around interlude:]

Let me paint this picture for you, baby

You spend your nights alone
And he never comes home
And every time you call him
All you get's a busy tone
I heard you found out
That he's doing to you
What you did to me
Ain't that the way it goes

When you cheated girl
My heart bleeded girl
So it goes without saying that you left me feeling hurt
Just a classic case
A scenario
Tale as old as time
Girl you got what you deserved

And now you want somebody
To cure the lonely nights
You wish you had somebody
That could come and make it right

But girl I ain't somebody with a lot of sympathy
You'll see

(What goes around comes back around)
I thought I told ya, hey
(What goes around comes back around)
I thought I told ya, hey
(What goes around comes back around)
I thought I told ya, hey
(What goes around comes back around)
I thought I told ya, hey

[laughs]
See?
You should've listened to me, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Because
(What goes around comes back around)

[laughs]

The song “What goes around comes around” by Justin Timberlake emphasizes points brought up in Catullus’ Poem 30. In Timberlake’s song he sings, "thought it was me and you babe me and you until the end but I guess I was wrong.” In poem 30, Catullus describes Alfenus as, “unanimis false sodalibus”. Catullus is saying Alfenus is deceitful to his temperate companion (Catullus). In the song, Timberlake feels he has been deceived and let on by his lover in thinking that they were both in love, similarly the same situation with Catullus and Alfenus. Also, in Timberlake’s song he states, "you had me in the palm of your hand.” Catullus says, "tute iubebas animam tradere,” and, “inducens in amorem.” Catullus is upset because Alfenus was “ordering him to hand over his life”, and he was “enticing him into love.” Timberlake and Catullus are upset because both of their lovers had too much control over them. They allowed their lovers to completely take over their lives just to be with them.
Despite all the harm that Catullus’ and Timberlake’s lover has caused them, both men believe that their lover will pay for his or her actions. Timberlake says, "what goes around, goes around, goes around comes all the way back around.” Catullus says, “facta impia fallacum hominum caelicolis placent.” Meaning, “the impious actions of deceitful men do not please the gods.” Timberlake believes that his lover will pay for what she has done to him by having someone do the exact same to her. Mostly in this poem, but as well as in many others, Catullus knows that the gods are aware of what the mortals do, and they will not be pleased when they see how badly Alfenus has treated Catullus. Both lovers will have a penalty. Lastly, Timberlake states, "cause I know that your living a lie.” Catullus describes Alfenus’ words as, “irrita,” meaning empty. Timberlake’s lover is not being truthful to herself and the life that she lives. Everything that Alfenus says should not be listened to because none of it is real. His words are meaningless because they are not truthful. Both Timberlake and Catullus suffer through the pain of a “break-up” and being enticed, but then let down by their lovers. They are both deeply upset but at the same time are hopeful that revenge will be sought on their lovers.

Comparison of Art form and Catullus Poem 5

"Kiss Me" By: Sixpence None the Richer

Kiss me out of the bearded barley
Nightly, beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress.

[Chorus:]
Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me

Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map

[Chorus (repeat)]

Catullus Poem 5
Vivamus mea Lesbia, atque amemus,
rumoresque senum severiorum
omnes unius aestimemus assis!
soles occidere et redire possunt:
nobis cum semel occidit brevis lux,
nox est perpetua una dormienda.
da mi basia mille, deinde centum,
dein mille altera, dein secunda centum,
deinde usque altera mille, deinde centum.
dein, cum milia multa fecerimus,
conturbabimus illa, ne sciamus,
aut ne quis malus inuidere possit,
cum tantum sciat esse basiorum.

Both in the song Kiss me and Poem 5, the narrator feels deep passion for their lover. Both narrators continuously say "kiss me" or "Give me many kisses" in order to get the point across that they are madly in love with their significant other. Both authors insist that their lover gives them the affection that they need in order to know that they are loved by them. This could be because the narrators are insecure about the love that they share with their lover, and they must be continuously reminded that they too are being loved and not just giving love. In the Poem Catullus talks about his lover Lesbia and says ", When the brief light has once set for us, the night must be slept continuously." In the song it is stated ", Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight lead me out on the moonlit floor." Both phrases emphasize the passion that the narrator feels. The authors relate their love to a dream or fantasy. The visions of night and the moonlight give a feeling of romance and demonstrate the intensity of their love. Both narrators are completely entranced in their desire to be with their lover.
